HOOVER, Ala. -- Bill Hancock said the College Football Playoff is considering moving the playoff semifinals from New Years Eve.Hancock, the CFPs executive director, said the move could happen no sooner than after the 2018 regular season. Were exploring if theres a better [date] for the semifinals, Hancock said. Were thinking about if New Years Eve is the way to go.The fact that Hancock publicly addressed the possibility of moving the games off New Years Eve indicates it is likely to happen, a source said.Theres still work to be done, a source said. However, I doubt Bill would have said something if he didnt think he could get the room [of the commissioners] there.Last seasons Orange Bowl semifinal on New Years Eve between Clemson and Oklahoma drew a 9.1 rating, a 38.5 percent drop compared to the previous years Rose Bowl semifinal on New Years Day, which had a 14.8 rating. The number of viewers dropped nearly 45 percent from 28.1 million for the Rose to 15.6 million for the Orange.Last seasons Cotton Bowl semifinal on New Years Eve between Alabama and Michigan State drew a 9.6 rating, a 36.8 percent drop compared to the previous years Sugar Bowl semifinal (a 15.2 rating) on New Years Day. The viewership dropped nearly 35 percent, from 28.2 million to 18.5 million. All CFP games are televised on ESPN.The FBS conference commissioners who created the CFP in 2012 said they wanted to start a new tradition by playing the semifinals on New Years Eve two of every three years during the 12-year contract with ESPN. When the Rose and Sugar Bowls host the semifinal games, those would always be played on New Years Day.After the just-completed Year 2, Hancock said the CFP stood by its decision to keep the semifinals on New Years Eve to start a new tradition in viewing habits. That stance, however, has softened with Hancock admitting the bigger priority is finding a date to get the most people to watch.Even before Year 2, ESPN executives lobbied extensively for the semifinals to be moved off New Years Eve. But the conference commissioners wouldnt budge. This seasons semifinals at the Peach and Fiesta bowls will be on New Years Eve with the CFP title game Jan. 9 in Tampa, Florida. The 2017 season semifinals at the Rose and Sugar bowls will be on Jan. 1, so the earliest the Playoff could move the semifinals is Year 5 -- after the 2018 regular season. Those semifinals are currently scheduled for the Orange and Cotton bowls on Dec. 31, 2017.The CFP has a 12-year contract with ESPN to televise the four-team playoffs. Hancock said there has been no talk from university presidents or commissioners about expanding the playoff field. Hancock added that after six years of the playoff -- after the 2019 regular season -- the CFP can look in and potentially change three of the six bowls -- the Fiesta, Cotton and Peach.Hancock also said the Big 12s decision to add a conference championship game after the 2017 season will greatly help the league in the CFP. The Big 12 was the only Power 5 league that didnt have a conference title game and didnt play 13 games. Hancock said they talked a lot with the Big 12 and told them how much adding another quality opponent would help.It gives them another quality opponent, Hancock said. It is a game-changer. Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys Sale . LOUIS -- Mike Smith is used to facing plenty of shots, so this was nothing new. PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Cameron Heyward spent three weeks fruitlessly chasing opposing quarterbacks but never wavered from the answer, and it had nothing to do defensive coordinator Keith Butler coming up with intricate blitz packages to compensate for a nonexistent pass rush. The way Heyward figured it, the defensive front needed to be better. A lot better. More aggressiveness. More winning 1-on-1 battles.During four soggy quarters at Heinz Field on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, the dam finally broke. And Heyward led the way.His career-high three sacks -- triple Pittsburghs season total coming in -- helped spark a 43-14 thumping in which the Steelers looked every bit the contender with New England and Denver for AFC supremacy.Seven days after getting clinically dissected by Philadelphia rookie quarterback Carson Wentz -- a game Heyward described as the Steelers getting their butts kicked (only with more colorful language) -- the Steelers defensive captain led the way. With us, when the defense has success, its because the defensive line does, Heyward said.A line that spent three hours manhandling the Chiefs. The chaos started immediately. Heyward sacked Alex Smith on Kansas Citys first drive and tipped an ill-advised screen pass that ended up in the arms of linebacker Jarvis Jones two possessions later. In between, defensive end Stephon Tuitt forced a fumble that set up Pittsburghs first touchdown. We have the best big people in the NFL, Steelers linebacker Vince Williams said. Those guys really led the charge on the effort and hustle tonight. And showed a fair amount of resiliency, too. While Heyward groused during the slow start, Tuitt preached patience. He knew the sacks would come in waves for a group that piled up 48 a season ago.So did linebacker Arthur Moats. As ineffective as the Steelers looked while the Eagles tore through them with ease, the truth is the film wasnt all bad. When you watch it and see that, youre not like, `Oh, weve got this big hole weve got to fix, Moats said. Its just like, `Hey man, if I do my job, you do your job, everybody does their job, everything is going to be fine.ddddddddddddYes, the Eagles played well while rolling up 34 points, but the Steelers believe a lot of their issues were self-inflicted.We had a lot of opportunities to get off the field, a lot of chances to stop the score from getting like that and getting those type of yards, Moats said. It was more us missing assignments, penalties on third downs, penalties in critical situations where we could get off the field.Against the Chiefs, the majority of those mistakes disappeared. Kansas City scored a pair of token touchdowns with the game well out of reach in the fourth quarter.Otherwise, Pittsburgh played with confidence and speed even with a slew of reserves getting extended playing time due to injury.Safety Jordan Dangerfield finished with five tackles in place of Robert Golden. Cornerback Justin Gilbert played for the first time since being acquired in a trade with Cleveland on the eve of the season.Williams set a career high with 13 tackles while Ryan Shazier rested a balky right knee. Williams even picked up his first solo sack with a second quarter takedown of Smith.Coach Mike Tomlin isnt quite ready to say Blitzburgh is back, though the results were certainly promising.I just think we performed better, Tomlin said. I dont know that we reinvented the wheel tonight, schematically ... I just thought they made it come alive.Game notes RB LeVeon Bell said he felt just fine after playing in his first full game in nearly a year. Bell finished with 178 yards of total offense on 23 touches in his return from a torn MCL in his knee suffered on Nov. 1, 2015, and a three-game suspension for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. ... WR Darrius Heyward-Bey caught a touchdown pass before leaving the game with a shoulder issue. Heyward-Bey directed any questions about his injury to Tomlin. ... Pittsburgh signed RB Daryl Richardson to the practice squad after releasing him last week to make room on the 53-man roster for Bell.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
