PROVO, Utah -- Change has enveloped the BYU football program and even its top players must adjust. The new coaching staff has implemented its own schemes on both sides of the ball and former middle linebacker Harvey Langi will move to defensive end as the Cougars convert from a 3-4 base defense to a 4-3.Langi began his collegiate career as a running back at Utah, so this switch is much easier. He and his teammates will be tested immediately against Arizona on Saturday in a neutral-site game at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Its titled as a new position, but footballs football, Langi said. From linebacker to D-end, its a lot of the same techniques, a lot of the same fundamentals. Stop the ball. Get to the quarterback. Same things.I have an edge of doing a lot of those things. Just trying to learn some of the finesse things, the small detail things that come with it. Its an art. Its fun though. I like it.The 4-3 traditionally has four down linemen, but Langi will be a hybrid-type of end. He will spend most of his time standing up instead of in a 3-point stance, similar to an outside linebacker. But Langi will be on the line of scrimmage, where things happen much quicker. He was second on the team with 68 tackles in 2015 and also had 6.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions.Hes big, hes fast, hes strong, BYU defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki said. His reaction, the way he plays. Weve got so many backers and so many guys that can do it, in order to get the best 11 on the field ... you try to put him somewhere he can shine. In the trenches, everything happens faster. At the backer depth, youve got four-five yards to react. In the trenches your reaction has to be a lot faster, you have to see blocks and anticipate things a little bit better. Hes been doing a good job.The Cougars return eight starters on defense, and Tuiaki said theres not a ton of change for the secondary in the new scheme. There could be more pressure on the back end without an additional linebacker dropping in coverage, but Tuiaki said the bigger difference will come in the box with the front seven. The defensive linemen now have different responsibilities that should allow them to be more involved.I think theyve embraced it, Tuiaki said. It allows D-linemen to make plays, but it allows us to make sure that if (the opponent is) blocking one-on-one, then the D-line can make the play. If theyre double-teaming, then the backer should make the play. Just mix it up that way.BYU finds itself in a tough spot with nose guard Travis Tuiloma still recovering from a foot injury suffered last season. The 6-foot-2, 301-pounder may be BYUs best player on defense and will likely miss multiple games. Junior Fred Warner returns as the most decorated linebacker while safety Kai Nacua was tied for No. 7 nationally with six interceptions in 2015.First-year coach Kalani Sitake, who served as defensive coordinator at Utah and Oregon State before accepting the BYU job, said this week is like Christmas and hes eager to show what theyve been working toward.Nacua added, Ready to wake the beast. Everyone stay calm and focus on what we need to focus on. Dont let outside things get in the way and when game day comes unleash that beast and let it roll. Hydro Flask Vit . BOSTON -- Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly left Boston College as the schools most decorated player. But it wasnt until he came back to campus after his rookie pro season that he picked up the honor his parents wanted most.Kuechly spent his first semester after winning the NFLs defensive rookie of the year award back in school, living in a dorm with his friends, taking five classes toward his degree. He finished his academic requirements online over the next two offseasons and graduated in 2015.Asked on Friday what motivated him to get the degree, he said with a smile, Because my mom told me to do it.Thats all youve got to say, Kuechly said at a news conference in Chestnut Hill on Friday, a day before BC will retire his number during its game against Syracuse. As long as shes happy, youre good. Once shes mad, its trouble.Kuechly led the nation in tackles for two consecutive seasons in college and won the Butkus, Nagurski and Lombardi awards before going pro. He was picked by Carolina as the No. 9 overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft. He was the APs defensive rookie of the year and Defensive Player of the Year the next year.Last year, he helped the Panthers to a 15-1 record and a spot in the Super Bowl. But Eileen Kuechly held him to the promise he made when he left school after his junior season. We shook on it, that he was going to get his degree, she said.It wasnt hard to persuade him to come back to campus while his friends were still there, but finishing the final classes was more of a slog.ddddddddddddThat was the best. Back with all the guys again, Kuechly said. I missed that part of being at school, just going back to the dorms, being with all your friends. That was cool. That was probably my favorite part about being back, was being around all the guys.Although he had spent time on campus, Kuechly hadnt been back for a game because of the difficulty of matching up his NFL off weeks with the BC schedule. You walk back on campus, its very nostalgic, he said, listing some of the places he had missed -- a dorm thats been demolished, a dining hall, a classroom building. It was a special place. Im glad I had the opportunity to come here.Having his number retired, Kuechly said, was something he thought about as a player while working out in the stadium under banners for players like Doug Flutie and Mike Ruth. You thought always one day maybe you could be up there on the wall with those guys, he said.Flutie lives in the area and comes back often; his nephew, Billy, was a teammate of Kuechlys.I think the No. 1 thing that makes me proud to be a BC alum, when guys like Luke come through. What they did at school, what they do off the field, and now continuing in his NFL career, its been amazing, Doug Flutie said. What he stands for and what this school stands for, he exemplifies. ' ' '
